Blue On Mary

The last two posts focussed on common features of nativity scenes. Since today is Monday I thought I’d participate in Blue Monday sponsored by Sally at Smiling Sally.

In many many nativity scenes Mary wears a blue robe, a blue head dress, or a blue shawl. The blue color relates to nobility ascribed to her. So also does the red color often used in her apparel Take a look at these blue examples:

  1. Good morning Carrie,
I kind of missed this information along the way about the blue and red. I'm happy to learn it here. You have a lot of great nativity sets. All we have is a little wooden set. Have a good week...

  2. Those are beautiful sets and I can honestly say I never knew that the colors were of significance. Bad me. I just checked my Nativity and my Mary is in two shades of blue.

  3. Loved this. I was grocery shopping this weekend and Christmas carols were playing...I had to stop and say.... What?????

But, it won't be long and I will be ready to get my goodies out and decorate.

  5. Carrie, love your Nativity sets.

The store, where my photos were taken, is in Leeds, Alabama. It is outside of Birmingham right off of interstate 59

  9. Each Nativity set is beautiful. I never knew the reason that Mary is in blue. I was so used to seeing her in blue that I took it for granted. I now use the Nativity set that belonged to my mother and I put it out the Wednesday before Thanksgiving.

  11. Thank you for sharing what blue stands for. I appreciate the calm color as a statement of her humbleness. I love in the second picture the stain glass-looking village scene in the distance.
