Collector plates are a category of collectibles which includes all sorts of subjects -- from nature themes to sentimental subjects, from movies to sports and many other examples.
Holidays make up one very popular category, with Mother’s Day and Christmas being the chief examples. Within the Christmas category we have plates highlighting the nativity of Jesus. In this post I will give an overview of some of the plates in the Carola nativity collection. Since it is Monday, it will focus on blue plates, joining with in Blue Monday sponsored by Sally at Smiling Sally.
The nativity plate might be a single offering by the manufacturer, but is usually part of a multi-year series. The subject of each individual plate may be produced out of order in terms of the story-line of the nativity story. Here is a series made in Norway by the Porsgrunds Porselænsfabrik, which begins with the Three Wise Men and does not show the beginning of the story until 1973 with the annunciation.
1969 The Three Wise Men
1970 On the Road to Bethlehem [Mary and Joseph]
1971 A Child is Born [Family and Shepherd]
1973 Promise of a Savior [Mary and the Angel Gabriel]
