Bethlehem on the Mantel

I am joining the Holiday-themed Bloggers Block Party hosted by Heather and Vanessa At the Picket Fence. December 6 focuses on Mantels and is hosted by Kristin at My Uncommon Slice of Suburbia.
For sometime I’d been admiring displays of lighted houses in Christmas villages seen in stores in the mall. For Christmas 2010 I gathered a few pieces and accesssories to set up a display in my study. It was set on a small table and on a nearby bookshelf.

This year I decided to set them up in the living room as part of a display around the fireplace.
On the mantel is the Department 56 lighted porcelain Little Town of Bethlehem. The set has 12 pieces and I arranged them simply with a spray of ivy behind.
A lighted garland had 6 fabric mache Renaisssance style angels in white and blue gowns alternating.

Below this, on the hearth I have large books that serve as a base. I covered with them with a lace runner and then laid cotton snow on top. The lighted houses are set around with little figures, snowmen and trees.

So the fireplace mantel displays has the Bethlehem of long ago while the hearth has a town scene in our world. (See the devotional that follows for more on Bethlehem)

Bethlehem
So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. -Luke 2:4

Bethlehem was like any other town in the hills of Judea. Yet, it was the birthplace of the greatest king of Israel, David, and one thousand years later, the Messiah.

How does such honor come to the ordinary? Were the people of this town particularly worthy? Was there some great strategic advantage to where it lay? Were the people of Bethlehem politically savvy, having a long history of producing great leaders? Not at all. The little town of Bethlehem was in the shadow of great Jerusalem just six miles to the north. Even the meaning of Bethlehem, "house of bread," is unremarkable.

But hundreds of years before the birth of Jesus, the prophet Micah predicted the destiny of an unremarkable, small place: "But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come for me one who will be ruler over Israel, whose origins are from of old, from ancient times" (Micah 5:2).

The townspeople of Bethlehem were surely proud to be the "Town of David" and the home of King David's famous grandmother, Ruth. Proud also, to be the location of the tomb of Rachel, Jacob's beloved wife. Yet, they must have wondered what Micah's prophesy really meant. When would another prophet like Samuel come to town and anoint a new king, just as he had done with the boy David?

But it didn't happen that way. On an ordinary day, while men plied their trades and women baked bread and children played in the streets, a traveling couple from Nazareth arrived looking for a room. They received no special treatment. No one offered them a room. Ordinary people were having an ordinary response to an ordinary looking couple.

Honor comes to the ordinary because of God's choice, whether it is God's choice to use a town, or a nation, or even a single man or woman, boy or girl. So if this is shaping up to be an ordinary day for you-be prepared. That's the stage on which the acts of God are played.

Prayer for Today:

Dear God, it so easy for us to assume that nothing exciting will happen with the ordinary. Help us this Christmas to see the amazing things you do when you choose to use the ordinary.

Bethlehem Advent Calendar

Here we are at December 1 - the first day of Advent, when we begin the tradition of opening one door (etc.) per day on our Advent calendars through December 24.
The Advent calendar I’m using this year is a stand-up scene of the town of Bethlehem.

When I opened it, the #1 window revealed a tiny picture and the text:
“The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light.”
Isaiah 9:2

This text points to the blessing brought by the new Babe, the long-awaited Messiah. He came to bring light to all peoples.

During this Advent season,
may the consciousness of the light He brings,
illuminate our hearts with joy and gladness.

Nativity Wreath

Decorating for the Christmas holidays is just getting underway at Oak Rise Cottage. On a door in the hall I hung a green wreath with nativity ornaments.

The ornaments come from Cedar View Christian Gifts a family business specializing in hand finished laser-cut wood ornaments. They are made in Arkansas, U.S.A. They are available at their web site, on Etsy and on Ebay. Each ornament is made of 1/4" premium birch with a golden oak finish and gloss lacquer. I’ve used gilt ribbon gold blown glass balls gathered in groups of three. The gold tones pick up the color of the lacquer.

In the center of the wreath just under a gilt ribbon bow is one of their three-dimensional ornaments with the Holy Family, titled Manger:

"And this shall be a sign unto you;
Ye shall find the babe wrapped
in swaddling clothes
lying in a manger."

At the sides and lower portion of the wreath are a set of three ornaments designed to look like lanterns with silhouetted figures. These three measure 6" high x 2 ¾" wide.

Orrefors Nativity Themed Christmas Plates

Several posts have been devoted to collectors plates with a nativity theme. From Scandinavia, we’ve seen blue and white plates from Denmark by two manufacturers.

From Royal Copenhagen comes this 7 1/4" diameter plate dated Christmas 1972 on front. It depicts Three Wise Men on Camels with palm trees in foreground.

Here is another plate from Denmark. It depicts the "Star of Bethlehem." It is made by Bing & Grondahl and is dated 1922. It is 7" in diameter and depicts the town of Bethlehem with the star above and inscription below: "Julen Aften 1922."

And from Norway by the Porsgrunds Porselænsfabrik,

An Angel and Two Shepherds 1972

Among recent acquisitions are plates from Sweden. These, however, are not blue and white porcelain, but clear crystal. They are annual Christmas plates from the Swedish manufacturer Orrefors.
Here is the original box for the first edition offering in 1973:

The theme of the plate is the visit of the Three Wise Men. They are seen with the Baby Jesus who lies in His manger cradle at the foreground left.

The 1974 plate focuses on the Shepherds receiving the Angels message. An angel hovers above, while several sheep are gathered round about the shepherds:

The 1970’s was a prime time for nativity Christmas plates and these are just a few examples. Search this blog under "collector plates" for more examples from various countries.

Blessings Plaque

With today being the second of October I know I must post to Carola Nativty Gallery blog. Furthermore, I must make good on all the drafted posts I’ve made with various topics to share with the followers of this bog.

Today’s item is one I planned to share back in March for Saint Patrick’s Day! It is a lovely ceramic piece from Ireland. It is a deep green and was made at the Callura Pottery in Country Clare.

The manufacturers marks are on the back, to the left and to the right bottom:

At 4 ½ inches high x 6 ½ inches at the base, it is a plaque for hanging on the wall or placing on the table top using the wire easel.

The arch shape is bordered all around with decorative three-leaf markings.

The interior of the arch contains a depiction of Mary, the Baby Jesus in the Manger, Joseph and a star above.

I understand that the inscription across the base, Beannachtai, is Gaelic for Blessings. Quite appropriate for the subject matter of this lovely piece. God blessed us all in the gift of His Son!

Gorham Crystal Nativity

Sadly, I have not continued to post during the holiday season as I had intended. The end of November found me preparing to host family for Thanksgiving and packing nativities for a display requested by the Italian American Cultural Center in Worcester, Mass.

In this post I will share the nativity set that serves as this year’s centerpiece in the dining room.
It is by Gorham and was made in Germany.

The clear lead crystal is embellished with 24kt gold-plated metalwork.
This set very difficult to photograph, so I made mosaics with photos I found online to give clearer views of the design detail.

Mosaic Monday

So much has happened in 2010 that I have not posted here for my nativity blog since March. In April, you may have heard I did suffer a small stroke and so much has happened since then. But I plan to post more regularly now and to have another giveaway, which I will annouonce soon.
Right about now I must get organized to send out my Christmas greeting cards to family and friends.

Sadly, last evening I attended a memorial service for a dear friend and former co-worker who passed away on Thursday morning. So I won’t be sending a card to her or receiving one from her. However, I am still blessed with friends, neighbors and family that I will be happy to send Christmas greetings.

Each year I save the greeting cards I receive. Many that I receive have a nativity theme since everyone knows about my creche interests. I have framed some of these beautiful cards. Here are some such cards arranged into a mosaic:

During the past year I have found many interesting vintage tree ornaments. Here is a set of celluloid figures, each set in a cathedral frame or gothic arch. The set was made in Italy and features the Family, Three Wise Men and Two Musicians. The frames with the Magi feature a cross above each head.

Here is my try at using these vintage ornaments in a mosaic. (I'm sorrry that the images are not as sharp as they could be):

A Sad Journey In Elegant Figures

The nativity story ended with a sad journey for the Family as they left Bethlehem for points south to Egypt. Goebel of Germany produced a series of figurines designed by Janet Robson which depicts that journey.

The modelling is elegant and serene. The characters are each dressed in blue and white garments.

Both Mary and her son wear white rimmed hoods:

As a collector who has a collection of state and foreign souvenir spoons, I just happened to run across some Christmas spoons. Among them I found spoons with a nativity theme! So-o-o, this is the latest addition to the collection profile.

The first group is placed on a vintage spoon rack that is shaped like a shield.

Vintage 1970 Frohe Weihnachten Christmas Coll. Spoon - 5 1/4" long; top of spoon has 2 Candles, ribbon, and fir bough; in the bowl is an enamel picture of Joseph, Mary, Baby Jesus, and a shepherd in a Stable with 1970 under it. On the back is Klepa Arts Germany.

The embossed finial has a picture of an angel blowing a horn with Merry Christmas written just below her. Silverplated. 4 1/2" long.

The following spoon fell off the rack behind a display table; so it will be some time before I see it again:

Christmas 1986. The Oval color finial has a picture of the manger with Angel observing from overhead. Approximate length is 5" silverplate (E.P.N.S.).

The next spoon is hand painted in the bowl. "Nativity Shepherds Follow The Star Noel" Made in U.S.A.
This artist-made nativity spoon is a 7 1/4" long silverplated spoon by Wm. Rogers. It has a wire loop for hanging. Rustic wire also holds with small silver heart that says "made with love." It is signed on back, "Joan Rudolff ‘09"
The picture in the bowl shows Shepherds and sheep with star above. Golden wire ribbon with silver edge forms a bow.

The handle is a lovely design.

On the back of spoon is the artist’s signature

Winter Cloche Scene

Since we’re all having lots of snow around outside here in New England, I thought to share a special creche set. It is "Winter White," a nativity scene designed by Pam Schifferl for Midwest of Cannon Falls.

Since Christmas it has been on a round skirted lamp table in the living room. The scene is set in an alpine stable made in Italy.

I thought this winter set would make a lovely subject for a vignette under a cloche. The cloche is a bell jar designed for use in the garden. So the glass has bands around and the view is not very clear.

First I placed a white plastic lace doily (brought by a colleague from Colombia) on the table, then arranged the Family, an Angel and a bare birch tree on the doily. Around this are the Three Wise Men with their gifts and a Shepherd with a lamb.

Green and white bunches lend some color. The knob of the large glass cloche is covered with a white crochet doily, tied with a thin green ribbon.

Here all the figures are placed on the doily. The birch tree is centered with the two floral bunches on either side.

The image is not so clear, but the scene is still lovely under glass.

Stained Glass Creches

In my other blog there was great response to a glimpse of my pastel colored stained glass nativity in my post about the new foyer light fixture. So, I thought to write a bit about it here, and share a few other stained glass creches.

In the 2006 Ebay listing for this set the seller indicated that “this is handcrafted by a local art teacher, all proceeds from sale will go to support his non-profit private Christian school.”
In this set of seven pieces, the figures range from 4 to 11 inches in height. Hand crafted in Virginia, the figures include Mary with Jesus, Joseph, Three Wise Men, a Donkey and a Sheep

Placed nearby is another stained glass nativity set, but this one is in deep jewel tones:

This 7-piece set includes a Star and 10” H stand, along with Mary, Joseph, the Baby Jesus, an Angel and Three Wise Men.

This one-piece Family mounted is placed on a shelf in the stairwell picture gallery. At about 7” tall, it shows Joseph, Baby Jesus and Mary in lovely colors of blue and green.

This stylized nativity is made from a panels of stained glass framed in pewter.
Because this is a split entry, from the picture stairwell you can look past this piece to see the large pastel set on the ledge above.

Here is a little (3 1/8” tall) nativity scene is made up of pewter figures of Joseph, Baby Jesus, and Mary in front of round stained glass with shooting Star. The base is of brass and it is made in Italy

Next is a stained glass nativity candle holder. It is 8"tall by 6" wide and has a glass base with a metal candle holder. It shows Mary, Baby Jesus in Manger, and Joseph with staff.

I also have some thrift store stained glass nativity items. Here tea light anndle holders provide illumination to a Family scene and Christmas Tree:

Lenox China Jewels Nativity

Several creche sets in the collection must be kept put away due to the amount of display space they take up. One example is the Lenox China Jewels nativity set, which is used every year during the Christmas holidays as the centerpiece of the dining room table. Before putting the set away I took photos of the groupings of figures in the table setting. See the tablescape post here.

Needlepoint Bell Pull

An earlier post featured featured framed embroideries in the collection. Today’s post deals with a lovely handmade needlepoint canvas bell pull. Its overall size is 43" tall x 7.1/2" wide, with a 6" tassel. The embroidery itself is 32. ½" long.

In the foreground is Mary and the Baby Jesus

The three wise men appear behind.

Colors include navy, purple, beige, gray, green, blue, brown, black, yellow, and white, with gold thread accents. (The back is lined in soft blue velvet.)

It hangs from gold colored wooden holder.

It is now one of my favorite embroidered pieces and hangs in the stairway with framed nativity wall art. Click here for the post on the stairway.

The Three Kings on Epiphany

will bring tribute to him;

January 6 is celebrated as the Feast of Epiphany, in keeping with the tradition that the Three Wise Men from the East arrived to worship the Baby Jesus on this day. It is called Epiphany to express the “appearing” of the Saviour to the Gentiles.

"The people that walked in darkness

have seen a great light:
they that dwell in the land of the shadow of death,
upon them hath the light shined.”
Isaiah 9:2

The wise men figures are usually the ones that are dressed in fabulous robes and head dress. More nativity scenes include these three figures than the shepherds. There are even designs of the three as a stand-alone artifacts. A new section of the nativity gallery is a display of wise men figurines and ornaments.

Ornaments are hung on a lighted garland:

A small book in the collection is The Gifts of the Magi: Gold and Frankincense and Myrrh, from the Metropolitan Museum of Art, NY.

In the slipcase along with the book are samples of the wise men's gifts:

These precious gifts provided financial assistance as the Family had to flee to Egypt. But they also symbolized tribute to the long awaited Messiah from foreign lands:

One of my Christmas gifts from my sister and brother-in-law was The Original Gifts of Christmas, a folder from the Holy Land Experience in Daytona, FL. Inside are samples of the three gifts.

They also sent me an ornament with the Wise Men and the Baby Jesus:

I have a particular fascination with the three wise men as part of the nativity story. I love to consider the Bible texts that show God’s interest in people from all parts of the world.

The biggest news of the nativity story is that the Baby Jesus was sent to make an even playing field and to offer eternal success for any person who chooses Him as their Saviour.

Hummel Knock-Off Figurine

A local thrift shop often puts small items in baskets and sell them for 5 cents, 10 cents or 25 cents. The other week I spotted a figurine that sent off the message, “nativity!” There was an angel standing next to a baby in a cradle:

The angel holds a candle aloft and gazes down at the Child. I found that it is in fact a knock-off of the Hummel “Watchful Angel” figurine by Goebel.

It has no label but by the brushwork (which looks like there are chips on the surface, but there is not), I believe it is by Napco, made in Japan in the 1950’s. It was in a 5 cents basket, and when I questioned two clerks, they said, "Well, from that basket, it is selling for five cents!"

Radko Nativity Ornaments

Christopher Radko designs a wide array of beautiful high end Christmas tree ornament designs which he has produced in Poland. As a nativity enthusiast I am glad that he has several nativity ornament series. Here is one.

"The Nativity" has three groups of three figures. The "Heavenly Family" is dated 1996.

The Three Wise Men set is dated 1995 and has ribbon streamers on each figure ornament.

Last is an Angel with two Shepherds with sheep, "Shepherd's Prayer, Gloria," dated 1997.

As is typical of Radko’s designs, each figure is finished in bright colors in unusual combinations. The color blue appears in the garb of Mary, Baby Jesus and one of the Magi, the Angel’s wings.

Nativity Wreath

A visit to the local consignment shop I spotted a large wreath. Passing it by the second time I realized that the figures embossed among the holly leaves were characters from the nativity story:
At the top is the Family with a cross-like Star. On either side are Angels.

On the left are Three Wise Men and a Camel and below another Angel.

On the right side of the wreath is a shepherd with flock and below another angel.

A red ribbon is twined around and at the base it forms is a red bow above golden bells

Lovely Vintage Spanish Plate

It seems that during the 1970’s there was much production of nativity themed items such as porcelain plates. Many of my annual nativity collector’s plates date from the 1970’s. Today’s subject is a lovely example of this.
It is a plate from the Spanish firm, Lladro, and shows Mary with the Baby Jesus on her lap and the ox and the donkey behind them.

The soft blue border frames the raised figures on the plate. The clothing has great patterned detail.

Tha plate has all the grace and perfection that is a Lladro hallmark.

Christmas Greeting

Each year I always send out Christmas greeting cards with a nativity theme. The card I am sending out this year proclaims:

He came to pay a debt
He didn’t owe
Because we owed a
Debt we couldn’t pay.

Inside the cover is a familiar quote from Matthew 1:23 KJV,

"Behold a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth
A Son, and they shall call His name Emmanuel…God with us."

The greeting reads:

This Christmas
May you see
And know anew
Just how great His love
Is toward you.

This is my wish for each of my blogger friends and for their loved ones.

Wood Nativity Story Ornaments

Among the newest ornaments in the collection is a series of four ornaments highlighting the biblical accounts surrounding the nativity of Jesus Christ.

They are made by Cedar View Gifts in Arkansas, U.S.A. The material is quarter-inch premium birch with a golden oak finish and gloss lacquer, they are 3 1/2" high x 3 1/2" wide. "Each piece is designed, laser cut or etched, hand-finished, assembled and packaged on our farm."

The first ornament shows Mary on a donkey led by Joseph with a Star above. The text is Luke 2:4-5:

"So Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, unto Judea..To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child."

The next shows the familiar scene of Mary, Baby Jesus in Manger and Joseph, with Star above. The text is Luke 2:11:
"For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord"

The third shows the shepherds with Star above. The scripture is Luke 2:8,9:
"And there were shepherds abiding in the field, And, lo,the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them."

The fourth ornament in the set depicts the Three Wise men on Camels, with Star above. The text is Matt. 2:1-12:
"There came wise men from the east, Saying, Where is He that is born King of the Jews? We have seen his star in the east, and come to worship him."

These are such wonderful reminders of Christ’s sacrifice to give us eternal life with Him.

Vintage Celluloid Nativity Ornaments

It truly is amazing to see the great variety of depictions of the Christmas story of Jesus’s birth. I recently acquired eight old nativity figure ornaments that seem to be made of celluloid. Each figure is encircled by an ornate brown cathedral style celluloid "frame". Incised on the back edge of five of the ornaments is "Made in Italy." Each of the figures are in 3-D relief and vary in size from about 2-1/2" high to 4" high; each ornament has a depth of about 1/2". The ornaments are exquisitely detailed right down to the fingers and faces on each figure -- though my photos do not do them justice.
The top of each ornament has its original fixed small brass style metal loop for hanging.

The first three ornaments are in a short arch:
Virgin Mary - approx. 2-1/2" across x 2-7/8" high
Baby Jesus - 2-3/4" high x 2-3/4" across.
Joseph - 3" across x 3" high.

Three Wise Men are in a pointed arch – each 4" high x 1" across. One is bare-headed, another wears a turban, and the third, a crown.

The two musicians are also in a pointed arch – each 4" high x 1" across. Many Italian nativities feature musicians. This set has two:

Since Christmas has now become more and more secular, most of the ornaments available cover non-religious themes. However, each year more and more artists and manufacturers focus on the theme of Jesus’ nativity. This helps us to focus on the Christ of Christmas.

Advent Calendars

Advent calendars aree special publications that help count down the days of Advent from Dec. 1 until Christmas Eve. Each day a numbered window is opened or an item is taken from a numbered pocket.These calendars are designed in varied styles and themes. Some are quite whimsical, while others are more in keeping with the theme of the Savior’s birth. No matter what the design, in the case of children’s Advent calendars, there is often a treat for each day, such as a tiny toy.

The calendar I used in 2007 and 2008 is a vintage Advent calendar printed in West Germany. The first slot reveals a Messianic prophecy "The people that walked in darkness, have seen a great light." Is. 9:2. This made me smile and think, “Yes, thank you, Jesus; may we always walk in your light!"

Next is a children’s calendar from Oriental Trading Co. I found it at a local thrift store last week. The special was your choice of a bag-full of Christmas things for $2.00; so this only cost me about a dime.
This felt calendar had numbered pockets with one figure for the nativity scene to be taken out each day and placed in or around the stable – Shepherds, Wise Men, animals, and the Holy Family.

The Baby Jesus figure is in the last pocket, December 24th.

The calendar I am using this season is a new one from Bronner’s Christmas Wonderland. It features the town of Bethlehem and has 24 windows scattered across the scene.
Each window reveals a Bible text and a color illustration:
A fold-out section at the front forms the town wall and gate.

A fourth calendar, one I received as a gift, has The Nutcracker as its theme.

Each day a mini book numbered for that day, tells one segment of the story of the Nutcracker, until it culminates on December 24 with the Magic Sleigh.

This calendar was published in 1993 by Workman Publishing Co. The story is retold by Mary Packard and illustrated by Nan Brooks.

The custom of using an Advent calendar to look forward to the coming of the Baby Jesus is a nice way to mark the family's anticipation of Christmas Eve.

Stairwell Picture Gallery

In her November 11 post, titled "Problem Staircase Walls" Susan @ Between Naps on the Porch showed how she solved her problem walls with family photos, interspersed with mirrors and wall shelves. This gave me the idea to take most of the nativity artwork (prints, paintings, embroidery) and display them all together in the lower stairwell. The walls were still bare from being painted this past August.

I didn’t take a before photo of the bare walls but did find a 2002 holiday photo showing the staircase with a few pieces of framed artwork.

Now I decided to dedicate it entirely to the nativity collection, since to the right at the bottom of the stairs is the room where the collection is displayed.

Plastic Canvas Nativity set

Today’s topic is a handmade nativity scene, cross stitched on plastic canvas. It was made around 1970 here in the U.S. The scene includes a Stable - 14" long and 8" high,

Mary, Joseph, Baby Jesus in the manger,

Mary is the only one dressed in blue -- the traditional color for the Virgin Mary.

The Angel stands on the roof (secured with Velcro patch). Note the glistening gilt threads.

Three Wise Men offer their precious gifts.

A shepherd kneels holding a lamb; nearby are two other sheep.

The animals include a donkey on the left, an ox in the left foreground and a camel at the right rear.

A pair of hens roost in the attic of the stable.

Mud People Nativity With Gift Bearers

In a recent post we looked at examples of European nativities including the little figures called mud (clay) people figurines or mud dolls. Souvenirs of Spain, these two-inch figures depict the peoples of various regions of Spain and various aspects of Spanish life. They are also sometimes referred to as "the poor man’s Lladro" in contrast to the fine porcelain figures put out by the Lladro firm. As promised, today's post gives a closer look at this delightful series.

My 18-piece set has two groups: the typical nativity scene and the gift bearers.

This is list of figures that came with the set, their names in Spanish and English:

Pastor Tocando Zambomba - Shepherd playing a zambomba; unique Spanish noise making instrument.

All their gifts refer to local trades and foodstuffs.
Among the gift bearers is one who presents a piglet for his gift... Everyone brings his gift, even though this would be most inappropriate for a Jewish baby!

Only one of the little pastores (shepherds) brings a lamb.

My set just includes the 18 pieces listed above. However, there are a large variety of little mud people available to add to your nativity – bakers, farmers, bullfighters, dancers, priests, choir boys, famous saints, -- even Don Quijote and Sancho Panza from Miguel Cervantes’ novel! There are also figures in typical dress from various regions of Spain.
Additions available for the biblical scene are stable, manger, camels, camels keepers, the wise men on camels, Roman soldiers, well, bridge, campfire, and other accessories.

Here are a few photos I found online of these whimsical clay figurines. From eons.com is this scene with a variety of local color.
On Flickr I found one collector who photographs a store display and indicates on each "lo tengo" (I have that one!)

Then he shows one of his displays with the figures in a setting with houses:

This Flickr user, macfacizar, also showed step by step as he sets up a large panorama. This is what Spanish belenistas (nativity builders) do each year in Spain. He also showed several mosiacs of his figures in their setting:

Sculptural Nativity Figurine

Here is a very pretty nativity figurine. Mostly in blue, the robes of Joseph and Mary is a sculptural sweep of their garments.

The Baby Jesus is nestled in the sweep of their gowns.

The parents look lovingly on the precious newborn.

This is the third in a series of posts about nativity scenes from different world areas. We began in Europe with Italy. Now we will survey some other European countries represented in the collection: England, Ireland, Spain, Russia, and Denmark.

Here is a set by Porcelanas M. Requena, made in Valencia, Spain. The blue and white plate in the background is by another Spanish firm, Santa Clara Porcelana.

Reed and Barton Silverplate Nativity Bell Series

In an earlier post we looked at bells of porcelain and ceramic. Today's topic is silverplated Nativity Bell Ornaments, Made in USA by Reed and Barton. A set of 10 were issued, 2 per year, from 1983 to 1987.

Three inches, the handles of bells depict nativity characters, and are marked on back, "Nativity Bell RAB." Each has a small hole for hanging on the Christmas tree.

Each bell figure was created from characters depicted in the nativity painting done by the Florentine Italian artist, Sandro Botticelli c1445-1510.

The first two bells issued in 1983, feature the Christ Child and Wise Man Melchoir with a coffer of gold. (Note: The bells are not polished, but were photographed in their 80's vintage finish!)

For 1984 there was an Angel, and Wise Man Baltazar with Incense.

In 1985 Wise Man Jaspar with his gift of Myrrh, and a Shepherd with a lamb at his feet.

Joseph and a Noblewoman were the characters for 1986.

The final pair, in 1987, were Mary and a Nobleman with a tethered monkey alongside.

Crash! There goes the Tree...

On Tuesday January 27, 2009 there were workers on the roof, tearing it up and doing a lot of banging, etc. They were doing a total replacement of the roof. The only problem I had was that the clock in the bathroom flew off the wall directly into the toilet!

On Wednesday, we were having a snow storm, so the roofing contractors did not come. After breakfast I was sitting at the computer in the study when I heard a crashing noise. I went to investigate and saw nothing in the dining room, kitchen, and hall. However, in the living room I saw the lovely nativity ornament tree fallen over into one the upholstered chairs. It had been placed on a round table with a glass top in front of the window. It had probably just shimmied over bit by bit on Tuesday, with the pounding on the roof, until the tri-footed stand just came to the edge of the glass top. There were bits of broken stuff on the floor and on the chair.

Ah-h-h….I had meant to return the decorated tree downstairs to the Carola Nativity Gallery, but had hesitated since it is quite a feat to carry the four-foot tree down the stairs. There had just been so much going around here that I had just been leaving it for another day.
I took off all the creche ornaments one by one, grateful to see each one that was still in perfect condition. I was especially thankful that the damage was minimal: one 1988 acrylic Miniature Creche Hallmark Ornament, (which I’ve glued back together), one blown glass nativity ornament, and two of the ivory glass ball ornaments. Thank the Lord!

Anyway, I thought that since they were all off the tree I could easily photograph them. With so much work with house painting and other improvements, I never got them photographed. I started to put them back on the tree yesterday, but set the Hallmark ornaments aside. Hallmark ornaments are a treasured American tradition with the annual dated ornaments on family, sport and other popular heroes, and much more. I collect Hallmark angels and nativity ornaments. I will share a few in today’s post.

Above I mentioned the 1988 acrylic Miniature Crèche Hallmark Ornament. This is part of a series that ran for five years from 1985 to 1989. In 1985 Miniature Crèche number one was made of wood and straw and contained brown figures inside.

In 1986 the second crèche was of white porcelain. It is a stylized arch with the Family inside. However, I could not find mine to photograph. In 1987 the third crèche was of copper and brass.

In 1988 the fourth crèche was of acrylic with frosted figures inside. It is star-shaped and has a gilt edging.

In 1989 the fifth and final Miniature Crèche was styled after the Spanish retablo, an art form used by religious teachers to carry the gospel from town to town in the Americas. Double doors open to reveal the Holy Family inside.

This next ornament is exquisitely detailed with and angel and the star at the roof of the shelter housing the figures of the Family with a lamb.

Around the back a vista of the town of Bethlehem and the scrolled and gilt roof:

A 1995 ornament shows figures of Mary holding the Baby Jesus and Joseph alongside. They are attached to an oval form. An angel hovers above.

On the oval back it reads "A Child is born/ The world rejoices!/ 1995.

One of my favorite Hallmark nativity ornaments is this one:

A golden arch hovers above the Family done in a sweeping sculpture. Note the tender aspect of the parents:

Thrift Rescue

As I walked around the thrift store one day last week I spotted the little clay figurine. It was still there after a few weeks of being ignored by all the shoppers -- including me. But this time I decided to bring it home.
It is just a small light brown clay vessel squeezed into an oval shape. It sits on four ball feet. The sides have a wash of white.

Along the upper edge, small striations represent straw.

Inside is a little figure with a round head, three poke marks for eyes and nose, and a curve for a mouth. It’s a little baby!

While the manger is whitewashed, the blanket is a small swath of blue:

I wonder who made this little representation of the Savior in the manger. On the bottom there are illegible markings, probably a name and date.

This little clay piece deserved to be rescued since someone, one day, thought of the Baby Jesus as an appropriate subject for a little work of art in clay.

Selected Nativity Bells

Christmas bells with a nativity theme provide an easy way to have a decorative touch on your desk, table or shelf.

Here are a few examples from the Carola Nativity collection; five of the seven have blue in their design:
First up is a ceramic blue and white “Journey to Bethlehem Bell.” It is from Hallmark Cards, Inc. Made in Thailand, it is dated 2001.
It has a blue ground with a white relief illustration of Bethlehem. The handle is a sculpture of Mary/ Baby Jesus/ Joseph.
White gauze ribbon loop for hanging.

This beige ceramic is carved with nativity scene around entire bell. Made in the Philippines.
5”T. On inside of bell: ”National Shrine of Our Lady of the Snows – Belville, Illinois. Made in the Philippines.”
Front of bell: Ox/ Lamb/ Mary/ Baby Jesus/ Joseph/ Lamb/ Donkey
Back: Four more lambs, with small stars sprinkled above them.

6.5” tall. Bishop Maximus of Nazareth and Galilee signed each piece, along with his official seal stamped on each. The Archimandrite Gregorio Chief Abbot of Bethlehem also signed each piece and they are each stamped with his seal. The Artist, Robert E. Ahlcrona also signed each Glad Tidings piece. "Glad Tidings " is an original painting by the contemporary master artist Robert Edgar Ahlcrona.

This cream ceramic Nativity Scene Bell is by Homco (American) Made in Taiwan.
It is 6” tall and the handle depicts the Star of Bethlehem.
On the front: Pastel picture of Mary, Joseph, Baby Jesus and reclining lamb
Back: Three standing lambs
The next two bells are part of a long series of Christmas bells. They are both 6" tall and made in West Germany using the art of Sister Berta Hummel and produced by Schmid Bros..

The first is 36 years old, made in 1973.
On the front: White ground with color illustration of 2 Angels/Joseph/ Baby Jesus/ Mary/Lamb

On Back "Christmas 1973" in gold.

"Angel’s Light" is dated 1990.
On the front: A white ground with a color illustration of an Angel with a large candle with Baby Jesus in the manger.

On Back "Christmas 1990" in gold.

From Spain is this white and lavender bisque porcelain Nativity bell. The maker is Lladrò and it is 3 ¼” tall. “Embossed with a nativity scene of Joseph/Jesus/Mary in snowy Bethlehem, it is banded in light lavender over white bisque.” Dated 1991 on front, it has a lavender ribbon for hanging.

More One-Piece Depictions of the Holy Family

I noticed that I two other one-piece nativities when I wrote the October 27 post. All of these are part of the Crèche Tableau category of my collection.

This handpainted holy family was made by the Demetz Art Studio in Italy.

It is 7" tall x 6" wide x 4 1/4"deep and has a wood base. The piece has very graceful and flowing lines:

The bottom of base has an embedded gold color disc that identifies this as a Vincenzo Demetz Figlio piece.

Next is a 12" tall stylized nativity named "Divinity." It is from Enesco’s Mahogany Miracle Series.

This series is designed by artist Ed van Rosemalen of the Netherlands. His family owns Parastone a renown European firm that is now also a manufacturer of collectibles lines such as Mahogany Miracle and Mahogany Princess.

On the bottom the stickers read: "Mahogany Miracle/ 754463/ "Divinity"/ c2000 Parastone/ Licensee Enesco Group, Inc." & "Made in China."

One-Piece Depictions of the Holy Family

While there are many nativity depictions of the central figures (the Holy Family), which are presented as one unit, they often just have the individual figures linked but are actually sculpted as separate figures.

In this example the Joseph figure seems separate from the one of Mary and Baby Jesus. But they are attached as one piece.

Other one-piece nativities, - the subject of this post -- are designed with sculptural fluidity and denote the figures as emerging from one piece of material. Here are four examples from my collection.

This marble-look sculpture is very graceful. It is 9 inches tall.

This Olive wood piece was made in the Holy Land and is 9 ½ inches tall.The sculptor used the grain of the wood to suggest fabric draping.

This 12 ½ inch piece is actually also a music box. It plays "Oh Holy Night" The figures seem to emerge from a tree trunk which is spangled with the Star of Bethlehem.

This 9 ¼ inch Holy Family piece has a 10 inch companion piece depicting the Three Wise Men

Inside Art Ornaments

Hello Friends! Just 60 days until Christmas, so I am starting to post to my nativity blog again.

Today I am sharing two of my latest nativity ornaments. They are of blown glass from Old World Christmas. They are in a star shape and painted from the inside. They are a dainty 2 1/4 inches tall. These inside art ornaments were introduced by Old World Christmas within the past couple years.

The first one is of the THREE WISEMEN kneeling with their gifts.

New Mantel Display

Christmas in July is a great concept for someone who loves Christmas, so I'm glad for this opportunity to share my nativity collecting interest.

The living room was painted just a few days ago. In putting the room back together I decided to change the mantel display. The previous display was a 7-piece nativity set hand crafted in USA. Done in soft pastel colored glass, range in height from 4 to 11 inches. The new mantel display is Department 56 porcelain village "Little Town of Bethlehem." There are three lighted buildings and several figures.

At Christmas time I would use an evergreen garland, but for now I placed an ivy garland behind the nativity scene.

Previously this set was displayed on a shelf which divided the living room from the hall stairs.

The change of wall color from off-white to light green and the change to the porcelain nativity makes me happy. I will post about the color metamorphosis on my main blog next week.

Blue Monday – A Special Bing and Grondahl Christmas Plate

Today I would like to share another Christmas collector plate. This one was the 1991 Christmas plate from Bing & Grondahl, made in Denmark. The Christmas plate series is a long one going back to the 1890’s. The 2009 edition will be the 115th Christmas plate.

During its long run as a series, there have been very few with a nativity theme. In 1911 the 17th plate in the series was titled "Angel and Shepherds." Then in 1922 , the 28th plate was named "Star of Bethlehem." Here is a photo of my plate; it shows the town of Bethlehem with the star above:

The title for the 1991 plate has a contemporary ring, "The Holy Family as Refugees." We see so much in the news about international refugees nowadays, that we can certainly realize how difficult it must have been for the Holy Family to flee their homeland and Herod’s soldiers.

The plate shows Joseph leading a Donkey carrying Mary and Jesus, Star above and pyramid in the distance.
Printed on the back of the 7 1/8" diameter plate: "The Holy Family as Refugees Mary and Joseph with the infant Jesus fled oppression, even as millions of people have done throughout history. The Holy Family was able to go home again, but other refugees have had to start live over in new lands. Giving them a helping hand affirms the inestimable value of human lives."

I can certainly hope that Bing and Grondahl will produce more Christmas plates with a nativity theme soon.

Blue Monday – Book, The Night of the Child

For today’s post I’ve chosen a lovely book which had a blue and gold dust jacket and a blue cloth cover that is sprinkled in gold. The title is The Night of the Child: Photographs from the Upper Room Museum Nativity Collection, published by the Upper Room Books in Nashville, Tennessee.

The text by Robert Benson is an amazing collection of brief essays exploring the significance of various aspects of the nativity of Jesus. It is accompanied by photographs from the nativity collection in the Upper Room Museum, located in Nashville.

Here is a quotation from the author which describes the work of creating nativity scenes.
“We have taken the essence of the story—a manger, a mother, a father, a child—wnd we do our best. We paint it on bowls and plates and canvases. We fashion it out of clay and wood and straw and glass. We sculpt it, mold it, twist it, tap it, whittle it out of something in an attempt of make a reminder for ourselves and a starting point for someone else.”

Blue Monday – Wedgwood Jasperware Nativity Ornaments

Jasperware was the creation of Josiah Wedgwood during the eighteenth century in England. This morning I’d like to share a selection of Wedgwood ornaments from my nativity scenes collection. Most are blue with white jasperware and some are all white jasperware.

I have lots of trouble taking good photos for my posts. For example, here are the photos I took of the ornaments I want to share for today’s post. The detail got washed-out with the flash:

In order to give a better view of the ornaments, I’ve found better photos on the web for most of the items. When I can try again and suceed in producing better photos, I’ll substitute those.

First is a Wedgwood Icon Ornament. It is 3.75" high in matte blue with white relief. A matching white Wedgwood ribbon is attached. The design is an openwork ball with white figures inside - Joseph/ Mary/ Baby Jesus.

The next two are all-white round Wedgwood Jasper Collectibles ornaments. The first is titled "O Holy Night" and depicts Mary/ Baby Jesus/ Joseph and Donkey under open Stable. It has a gilt ribbon for hanging.

The second one is titled "We Three Kings" and features three kings on camels under curving palm trees.

The all-white ornament below has gold accents and a white Wedgwood ribbon for hanging. Shaped like a lantern it is approximately 4 ¼" tall and 2" square. Joseph / Baby Jesus/ Mary are seen inside a stable.

The next ornament is about 2.75 inches tall and has a blue ribbon for hanging. It shows two shepherds with sheep observing a white star above.

This ornament is a 3-inch circle of all-blue jasperware with a blue ribbon for hanging. The figure is a standing shepherd with staff and six sheep.

Last are the ornaments depicting angels... angels always add graceful presence to any nativity scene. First is a Wedgwood Jasperware Standing Angel Ornament that is 3 inches in diameter and has an openwork border:

The next two angels are in all white with relief on both sides. The first one blows a trumpet and has a blue ribbon for hanging.

The second angel is delicately embellished in gold and also blows a trumpet while carrying a branch. It has a gold cord for hanging.

Vintage Nativity Ornaments – Jewelbrite

For today's entry I thought I’d focus on two sets of 1950's vintage nativity ornaments, made of brightly colored plastic manufactured under the name Jewelbrite by Decor.

The first set is shaped like spheres. Each has an open front with a silver color background in front of which is a three-dimensional scene. The red one has 2 Shepherds and a sheep; the blue one has 2 Wise Men; and the yellow one has Mary, Joseph & Baby Jesus in the manger.

The second set has a lantern shape and also an open front with a silver color background. The green one and the blue one each has a Wise Man with Camel; and the yellow one has Mary, Joseph & Baby Jesus in the manger.

Blue Monday – Portuguese Collector's Plate

The only item in the collection from the country of Portugal is a lovely collector’s plate..
Dated 1994, the plate is an 8 ½" rounded square. The back of the plate says, "NG Porcelanas, NATAL 1994, edicao limitada de 1500 pratos" (NG Porcelanas, CHRISTMAS 1994, limited edition of 1500 plates).
The design by by artist Batista depicts Joseph or a Shepherd with a lamb and Mary with Jesus on her lap.

This exquisite plate is white, with navy blue, light blue and embellished with gold (metallic)

As the only Portuguese item in the collection, it is a delight to own.

Vintage Plate by Hudson Fine Pewter

The item I am sharing today was made in Massachusetts, in 1979 by Hudson Fine Pewter. The plate is 5 3/4 inches in diameter, and was published in a Limited Edition.

Depicted on the plate is a manger scene with angels and sheep around the Baby Jesus. It was sculpted by Albert C. Petitto. The detail is very fine.

The back of plate reads:
"While Jesus lay asleep in peace,
radiant with love,
God sent his littlest angels
with candles from above
– RoseMary"

The border of the plate has a finely detailed design of poinsettias, holly berries and leaves. In addition, four bows help to anchor the design.

Show and Tell Friday - Mahogany Miracle Nativity

This week’s Show and Tell Friday subject is also from Enesco Corporation, as was the Friends and Brothers nativity set shown in the February 13 post.

The designer of the Mahogany Miracle and Mahogany Princess series is Ed van Rosemalen of the Netherlands. His family owns Parastone a renown European firm that is now also a manufacturer of disireable collectibles lines.

Mr. Rosemalen’s biography indicates that "he opened a new branch of his family's business, Parastone[est 18//] which was once known primarily for restoring paintings and church sculptures. Now, thanks to Ed's infusion of energy and talent, Parastone produces original artwork. Ed's own work, which is translated and produced by Parastone, has won him worldwide acclaim."

Enesco Corporation was the United States distributor of Mahogany Miracle items, since that line is now no longer in production.

In a Stable we see the figures all arranged to view the Baby Jesus. The lighting made it difficult to capture the detail carved on each figure.

Blue Monday - Hallmark Creche Ornament Figurines

A large portion of the ornaments in the Carola nativity collection are made by Hallmark Cards, Inc. Our topic for Blue Monday is a set of figures made as Christmas tree ornaments by Hallmark. They came out over a period of five years from 1995 through 1999.

Each figurine can be displayed on a tabletop or shelf, but they each have the small loop for hanging as an ornament as well.

"Heaven’s Gift" dated 1995, is made up of two pieces, Mary with Baby Jesus, and Joseph. Joseph wears a blue robe.

"Kindly Shepherd" dated 1996, gently carries a lamb on his shoulder. His turban has blue and red stripes, while his wrap is lined in blue.

"The Legend of the Three Kings" dated 1997-1999 represent "three African kings who joined other travelers to worship the infant King and offer Him their special gifts."

King Noor, 1st king – dated 1997 carries a covered lamp of gold. He wears a flowing blue robe and his headdress also incorporates two blue hues.

King Kharoof, 2nd king – dated 1998 carries a bag of finest silk.

King Mahl, 3rd king – dated 1999 carries a box of jewels.

To me, this is one of the loveliest nativity figure ornament sets made by Hallmark.

Enesco Friends and Brothers Nativity

Here is a very cute nativity set by Enesco Corporation. It is from the "Friends and Brother" series, designed by Karen Hahn in 1998.

Mary reclines on a chaise with Baby Jesus, while Joseph holds up a lovely quilt. Note the bells on Joseph’s staff, which he keeps close by.

From the front and from the back the detailing is quite lovely.

There are three additional figures:

The four-piece set of Accessories includes a bowl of casava, birds and a clay jar, a dish of vegetables, and a hen nesting on a coil basket.

Blue Monday - Vintage German Nativity

For Blue Monday I’d like to share a vintage nativity made in Germany. Each piece has the word 'Germany' impressed on the side of the figure. This set is painted in delicate colors including a soft blue on some clothing worn by Mary and Baby Jesus.

The scene consists of Mary, Joseph and Baby Jesus, an ox, a donkey, three standing sheep and one resting sheep.

This lovely porcelain set is a graceful traditional rendition of Christ's nativity.

Blue Monday: All God’s Children Nativity Series

Since the month of February is celebrated in the United States as Black Heritage Month, I will feature several ethnic sets from the nativity scenes collection which feature African-American designs.
The first one is from the All God’s Children line of decorative collectible figures created by Miss Martha. As you will see, several figures have blue in their costumes, an so, work out well for Blue Monday.

"At dress rehearsal for the Christmas play, Mrs. Sue gave Charles a small gift box he was to carry for the baby Jesus. As he opened the lid to see what treasure was enclosed his heart sank because the box was empty. He quickly ran to his classroom where he tore up small pieces of paper and wrote the same word on each piece. He filled the box with ‘LOVE.’"

Show and Tell Friday – New Pop-Up Nativity

In November I shared a pop-up nativity book in this post.

Last month my middle sister informed me that I would love one of my Christmas gifts from her, and she couldn’t wait until I opened it. It was very special – a fold-out or pop-up nativity.

Nativity Scenes From – Europe Part 1, Italy

This is the second in a series of posts about nativity scenes from different world areas. We turn now to Europe since that is where our western concepts of the nativity scene were developed. The display shows items from western Europe and ends with Italy. This post will focus on Italy because the tradition of the nativity was initiated there.

On Christmas Eve in 1223 St. Francis of Asissi provided a simple live nativity scene in a cave in Greccio, a village near Assisi, Italy. The scene consisted of a manger filled with straw an ox and a donkey and was set in a cave near the town. It took place as part of a Christmas Eve service at which Francis preached. In time this became a practice followed in other places across Italy.

Then, representations of the nativity of Jesus were made of ceramics, porcelain, wood and other materials. In homes of the wealthy these representations became quite elaborate, with dozens of characters in the scene. The custom spread across Europe and then to the new world.

Perhaps the most well-known nativity product in United States is the Fontanini line. Made in Italy, it is available in many sizes. The most popular size is the 5 inch size, for which many different stables and figures have been produced. In the U.S. Fontanini is distributed by Roman, Inc. Following are views of my Fontanini™ Heirloom Nativity.

I started out with 13-piece set of 12 figures and the stable.

Since then I have added other figures, accessories and structures to the scene.

I plan to enhance the setting with a multilevel unit and a more effective layout to depict the nativity story.

Here are the angels and the shepherds and their sheep:

The last grouping I have for this Fontanini set is an animal shelter with attendants:

The photo in the header of this blog pictures another Italian set, the Castagna nativity. It is made of alabaster and resin, referred to as "cold cast marble", "hand finished after removal from mold." The Castagna Collection was made in Bagni de Lucca, in the Tuscany hills of Italy in 1991.

"When Castagna was asked to make a Nativity Collection, she insisted that a few conditions be met. The setting would not be an Alpine manger or stable, but rather a stone structure as found in Bethlehem at that time. The figures would not be Italian or Spanish. They would have to be of Biblical origin. The figures would have to be animated and communicate the awe that Joseph and Mary must have felt when visitors from afar came to the humble stable to worship their child. The outcome of her efforts is yours to behold."

Next we have a grouping of three small nativities.

At the top is a vintage white plastic nativity scene. 6 pieces: 1.5, 2.5, and 3.5 inches.

On the left is a hand painted ceramic nativity by Nuova Capodimonte. 1-piece sculpture. 5" T x 4" W. inside a yellow grotto the colorfully dressed Family takes shelter.
On the right is a handpainted nativity family by Demetz Art Studio. 7" T. 6" W x 4 1/4"D wood base. "On bottom of base is an embedded gold color disc that identifies this as a Vincenzo Demetz Figlio piece."

Next is a three-piece set of art glass infused with gold, made in Murano, Italy.

Another small one-piece nativity is of pewter and stained glass with brass. 3 1/8" T. Brass base displays pewter figures of Joseph, Baby Jesus, and Mary in front of a round stained glass with a shooting Star.

This scene shows a cave-style stable, which was likely what the place for sheltering animals was like in long-ago Bethlehem.

Vintage Thingies Thursday – Three Book Illustrations

For today’s vintage subject I’d like to share three framed illustrations from a book
titled 'A Talking Book- The First Christmas Morning' story by Minnie Lake. Narrator Frank Phillips. Illustrations by John Mansbridge; Music by Leslie Bridgewater; Produced by Nicholas Sandor; A TPL production in cooperation with Religious Films Ltd., London. Trade Distributors Horace Marshall & Son LTD Temple House, Temple Avenue London. 1948.

I bought these three prints from the book in 2005 from an eBay dealer in England. The frames were bought at Michaels.

The first print is "Mary, Newborn Jesus, Joseph, Shepherds." In the center we see Mary with the reclining Babe in arms, and Joseph nearby. On the left are shepherds and a lamb, and on the right an ox, donkey and sheep.

The second print shows "Joseph Welcoming Three Kings." In the left foreground we see an animated Joseph at door motioning the three visitors to come in.

The third print is "Angel Announces Jesus Under Star." Here the Angel under the Star announces Jesus’ birth to shepherds in field with their flock.

I enjoy the composition of the illustrations. They each provide a fresh view of the nativity story.

Nativity Ornament Trees

Earlier, in this post I introduced one of two nativity trees. Today I’ll share a second nativity tree.

The two types of nativity ornaments in the collection are defined in the post, "What the Collection Includes,": a. creche ornaments -These are small nativity scenes meant to be hung on a tree as ornaments. Example:

The two nativity trees I have set up each uses one type of nativity ornament as defined above. The first one I’ll call "Bethlehem Vignettes" – creche ornaments (depicting aspects of the nativity story)

As mentioned above, this tree was presented in the post for Nov. 20, 2008:

Here are closeups of the various nativity ornaments.

The second tree might be called "Figures of Bethlehem" – figure ornaments (people and animals of the nativity story)

This particular tree is 6 ½ feet tall. I have left it in its box in the garage since I could not get it to stand straight after the first year I used it. It kept leaning and leaning. So now I must find another 6-foot tree so the creche figure ornaments can be displayed securely.

Finally, an 18" miniature tree holds miniature nativity ornaments. It was presented in the Nov. 13, 2008 post.

The theme of the nativity is wonderful when a family desires to focus on the true and most meaningful reason for the Christmas season.

Vintage Thingies Thursday – Antique Photogravure

For this week’s Vintage Thingies Thursday entry I will share an antique print. It was published by Gebbie & Husson in 1889. The title printed in the lower margin reads, "Nativity Night, Shepherds, Sheep Goats."

This photogravure was based on the original painting by Henry Rankin Poore (1859-1940). With an 8" x 9" image area it was printed on heavy-weight paper, with the reverse left blank. The paper measures 11.5" x 17".

Though it does have some light foxing on the far outside margin edges, the print remains in very good condition with the image area crisp and clean. I was happy to add it to the collection in 2006.

This very expressive picture shows the shepherds discussing what has been revealed to them by the angels.

"When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, "Let's go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about."

The Star of Bethlehem is an important motif in the story of Christ’s nativity. What a wonderful symbol of the Light that had been born into the world – Jesus, the Savior of His people.

Ruby Tuesday – Stained Glass Nativity Scenes

For this post I thought I’d share stained glass nativity scenes from the collection. As many of them include the color red, it fits right in for Ruby Tuesday.

First up are vintage stained glass votive holders, a round nativity scene and a Christmas tree.

Next is a small stained glass tableau with pewter nativity figures on a brass base. Made in Italy, 3 1/8" tall. A shooting Star intersects the round stained glass.

This one-piece stylized nativity is made from a panel with stained glass framed in pewter.

A 9-piece nativity set includes a Star and a 10" high stand. Figures depict Mary, Joseph, Baby Jesus in manger, an Angel and Three Wise Men.

This hand crafted nativity set was made in USA [Virginia?] and has 7 pieces, ranging in height from 4 to 11 inches. Done in soft pastel colored glass, the set is "handcrafted by a local art teacher, all proceeds from sale will go to support his non-profit private Christian school." Figures are: Mary with Jesus, Joseph, Three Wise Men, Donkey and one Sheep.

Wise Men Still Seek Him

January 5th is the eleventh day since Christmas Day or Twelfth Night, the Eve of the feast of Epiphany. January 6th is called Epiphany or the appearing. Western Christian tradition holds this as the day the Wise Men arrived at the place where the Baby Jesus was in Bethlehem. This is considered as God appearing to the Gentiles, while the Shepherds represented the nation of Israel. Matthew 2:1-12 tells the story. It ends on a joyful note:

9After they had heard the king, they went on their way, and the star they had seen in the east[e] went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was. 10When they saw the star, they were overjoyed. 11On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold and of incense and of myrrh. 12And having been warned in a dream not to go back to Herod, they returned to their country by another route." Matthew 2:9-12 NIV

The three Wise Men or Magi are usually the most elaborate and highly decorated figures in the nativity scenes. They wear great robes, stately headdress such as crowns, and carry rich gifts.

A lot of Wise Men figurines are designed as a stand-alone motif and are not part of a nativity set. Examples of Magi as stand-alone sets are:

A one-piece set from Puerto Rico

In Spain and in Latin American countries January 6 is a special holiday, the 'day of the three kings.' There are street processions, giving of gifts, and other festive activity.

Here are two prints done by Puerto Rican artist, Michelle Yegros, both focussing on the Magi.
"Magos en la Capilla" (Magi in the Chapel), a digital serigraph on acid-free linen paper, done in 2003. The actual printed image is about 7" x 6.5" on 11 x 8.5 paper.

"Sueno con los Reyes"(Dream of the Magi), a digital serigraph printed on acid-free linen paper. The actual printed image is about 7" x 6.5" on 11 x 8.5 paper.

Blue Monday – A New Plate

Here is the latest plate added to the collection. It is made of clay and handpainted in Peru.

Although the dominant color is sunny yellow, there are lovely blue elements across the design.
Blue appears in clothing and in the bit of sky above the golden star

The mood of the painting is light and joyous, especially when you look at the frolicking lambs.

New Tree Ornament…Thanks Sheila

This morning the American Express truck delivered a lovely ornament from Sheila at The Quintessential Magpie. It is a white church with stained glass windows all around. When a mini bulb is inserted it lights up beautifully.

Last Christmas one of the gifts I received was a CD of Christian hymns and songs. I was immediately struck by the message of the second song, titled "He is Not Just a Man."*
The lyrics express the good news that Jesus Christ is one with humankind and one with the Godhead:

The greatest gift to man from the Father
Would change us all in ways we’ve never seen;
Yet His first moments were in a manger,
And soon every living thing would call Him King,
yes they would.

Though we didn’t know it then, we would soon understand
That His life would reveal God’s perfect plan.

Arts and Crafts for Nativity Wall Hangings

For today’s Show and Tell I will share some fabric arts and crafts items from the nativity collection.

A. Batik
Batik is a technique used on fabric in a wax-resist process. The fabric is coated in wax according to the pattern desired. Dye is applied and seeps through the fabric not penetrated by the applied wax. Batik is done in Indonesia, India, West Africa, Iran, Malaysia, Philippines, among other countries.
Here is an example of batik from India

B. Applique and Quilting
The stitcher choose to frame this appliqued piece in an embroidery hoop. It shows Mary Joseph and Baby Jesus in a simple folk design. The fabrics are small-scale country prints.

C. Mola
In the islands off the coast of Panama the San Blas women make a type of reverse applique, called molas.

D. Mixed Media
Here the crafter used twigs, wood, wire, twine and cotton fabrics.
